What is the Return to Duty Process? 

Per the DOT and FMCSA, the return to duty process is fairly strict. It is a series of mandatory steps a commercial transportation employee must follow after a substance abuse violation. 

The process requires that the employee complete a few core steps should the employee wish to return to their job function. They include: 

  • Participation in a prescribed treatment program, 
  • Passing of a drug or alcohol test, and 
  • Follow a documented and passed testing schedule. 

What Kind of Employees are Required to Follow a RTD Process? 

Any employee who operates in a sensitive transportation function must conduct the return to duty testing process if they violate a drug or alcohol testing rule. These roles include professional: 

  • Aviators, 
  • Truck drivers, 
  • Public transportation operators, 
  • And more. 

What Happens if Your Fail a Return to Duty Drug Test? 

Per the FMCSA, if you fail your RTD test you are immediately removed from your safety role with your employer. You will remain removed from your job until you successfully complete the RTD process. This includes an SAP-sponsored treatment plan.
