When we think about what makes a great road trip, it’s easy to focus on the destinations – sun-drenched beaches, charming small towns, or majestic national parks.

But often, the places we remember most vividly are the ones we stop at along the way.

A clean, thoughtfully maintained rest stop can turn a grueling drive into something that feels a little more human.

Our survey of over 3,000 drivers and truckers didn’t just highlight the best restrooms in America – it uncovered deeper patterns about what travelers really value on the road.

Looking beyond just the top 10, here’s what the full results reveal about the evolving rest stop experience across the country:

Key Findings

Nature Wins Big

Many of the highest-ranked stops are set against stunning natural backdrops.

From the Kula Forest Reserve in Hawaii to the Painted Canyon Rest Area in North Dakota, drivers consistently reward places that offer more than just facilities – they offer a moment to breathe, stretch, and reconnect with the world beyond the windshield.

The Rise of the Super Welcome Center

Forget dingy bathrooms and vending machines. States like Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia are setting a new standard with huge, hospitality-driven welcome centers.

These centers are offering a first-class restrooms that sticks in travelers’ minds.

East Coast Dominance

While Hawaii grabbed headlines, it’s the East Coast that dominated overall. Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey placed heavily across the full rankings.

This suggests heavy-traffic states with major tourist economies have realized the true value of investing in their highway hospitality.

Two Clear “Types” of Great Stops

There’s a noticeable split in traveler preferences:

  • Some drivers love the restrooms in peaceful, scenic stops like Waimea Canyon (HI) and Painted Canyon (ND).
  • Others prioritize the restrooms that come with modern, polished plazas like the Biden Welcome Center (DE) and Sideling Hill Plaza (PA).

Both styles perform well, but when asked to rank their absolute favorites, many drivers lean slightly toward nature and tranquility when given the option.

Welcome Centers Still Matter

The data shows that drivers notice when a rest area doubles as a state welcome center. Many of the top-ranked stops – like those in Florida, Georgia, Maine, and New York – aren’t just bathrooms; they’re also invitations to explore the region.

Towns that greet travelers warmly at the border clearly leave a lasting impression.

The Interstate 95 Effect

Several of the highest-scoring restroom stops are located along I-95, the backbone of East Coast travel. Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Delaware all boast impressive facilities along this busy corridor, reflecting how critical first impressions are along one of America’s busiest highways.

Scenic Views Make a Huge Difference

Restrooms located in places that overlook water, canyons, mountains, or green spaces consistently ranked higher.

Stops like Painted Canyon (ND), Waimea Canyon (HI), and Vicksburg Welcome Center (MS) all benefited from views that made drivers want to linger longer than strictly necessary.

Renovation Pays Off

Places like New Kent East Rest Area (VA) and other newly updated stops show a clear pattern: when states invest in renovations, travelers notice – and appreciate it.

Shiny new bathrooms, better landscaping, and fresh signage all correlate strongly with higher rankings.

Midwest Reliability

While the coastal states often steal the headlines, Midwest locations like New Stanton Service Plaza (PA), Rest Area 10 in Wisconsin, and Kittery Welcome Center (Maine) proved that a clean, dependable place to stop is just as appreciated in America’s heartland.

Long-Haul Favorite States

The data hints at which states long-haul truckers especially appreciate: North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky appeared again and again in the higher tiers, suggesting that frequent road travelers favor states that make thoughtful investments in both facilities and parking availability.

Final Thoughts

A clean restroom can change the mood of a long journey. From mountaintop overlooks in Hawaii to polished welcome centers in Florida, the highest-rated towns with the best restrooms show that small investments in comfort, cleanliness, and care have a ripple effect that travelers remember long after they get back on the road.

When towns and states take pride in their rest stops, they’re sending a clear message:

“You’re welcome here. Even if you’re just passing through.”

Methodology

Online panel survey of 3,017 drivers based on age, gender, and geography. Internal data sources are used to obtain population data sets. We used a two-step process to ensure representativeness through stratified sampling and post-stratification weighting.

Respondents are carefully chosen from a geographically representative online panel of double-opt-in members. This selection is further tailored to meet the precise criteria required for each unique survey. Throughout the survey, we design questions to carefully screen and authenticate respondents, guaranteeing the alignment of the survey with the ideal participants.

To ensure the integrity of our data collection, we employ an array of data quality methods. Alongside conventional measures like digital fingerprinting, bot checks, geo-verification, and speeding detection, etc. each response undergoes a thorough review by a dedicated team member to ensure quality and contextual accuracy. Our commitment extends to open-ended responses, subjecting them to scrutiny for gibberish answers and plagiarism detection.
